Police reported that a man was fatally stabbed at a homeless shelter some time around early Wednesday morning. They responded to a call that was received shortly after the clock struck midnight. A 911 call presumably from the homeless shelter indicated that a man had been stabbed.

Christopher Bowman had been living at the homeless shelter located on West Julian Street. Officers state that he stabbed during an altercation with a different resident of the so-called Julian Street Inn. According to Sgt. Jason Dwyer, Bowman was pronounced dead at age 37 at 12:25 AM.

Police have a suspect in custody. They arrested Matthew Jacobsen, age 25, in connection with the murder of Christopher Bowman. He was still on the scene when police officers arrived. Considering that the homeless shelter was his current place of residence, one might imagine that he was not able to get very far.

Cases involving homeless residents might end up involving public defenders. Those who cannot afford an attorney still have the right to one. The authorities actually appoint one to those who are not able to actually foot the bill for their own legal costs. This helps to provide a safety net for society's destitute.

No further information was provided on what prompted the altercation in the first place. Police were not at liberty to give any additional information about the crime. It actually is not clear whether or not police have determined any further details about the motivations, though they are relatively sure that the stabbing was as a result of a disagreement.

Homicide numbers have been down in San Jose. This was the first homicide in three weeks. It was also the first homicide since the San Jose police started a new gang and violent crime suppression program on June 20. There have been 25 other murders in the city this year.

The last was on June 19. Manuel Urzua, age 16, was attacked by several different members of a street gang. He was shot at least one time. Since that time there were no further homicides until the murder of Christopher Bowman.
